What to reach for

Governed by: docs/design/specs/2026-07-15-plugin-catalog-tiered-packaging.md

The catalog is an inventory. This page is the short list: what to put on a channel when you have no time to read a table. Two jobs, because they want different things — a show cares about latency above almost everything, and a mix does not.

The house processors

Two of the desk's most useful processors are not LV2 plugins at all, and so appear in no table here: they are built into the console and carry no hosting verdict to earn.

  • FBS, the feedback suppressor — listens to a channel, recognises a ring and plants a narrow cut at its frequency, per channel and off until you arm it. See feedback suppression.
  • HRP, the harmonic resonance processor — finds unusually strong harmonic components of one instrument's material and applies sparse, conservative cuts. Rack it on a channel, never on a bus or a sum, where the harmonic model describes nothing. It racks bypassed.

Both are live tools first. In the studio the harmonic stage earns its place for the opposite reason: run the other way it adds harmonics rather than removing them — a colour, not a cure.

For a live show

100 plugins. Chosen for the live job: measured inside the live latency allowance at every rate, from a family with a track record, and with no control that can quietly overrun the budget mid-show. Sorted by latency at 96 kHz.

For studio mixing

The desk is equally a studio mixer, and the studio job lifts the one constraint the live list is built around: latency stops disqualifying, and the stakes of an overrun fall. So the studio list is the live list plus the 6 recommended plugins the live allowance excludes — look-ahead limiters, multiband dynamics, linear-phase and convolution work.

It is not simply the live list with the limits removed: some entries are the same plugin used for a different job, the harmonic processor above being the clearest case.

What the console offers

The picker serves 70 plugins — the curated palette, not everything installed on the machine. A plugin you installed by hand will not appear even though the host can load it; the palette is a short list you can trust under pressure, and the full matrix is one click away.

Each role below is one of the picker's groups, ranked the way the picker ranks it: the lowest latency class first, the better-known house first within a class, heavy variants last. An entry whose plugin is not installed on the machine is left out of the picker rather than shown greyed. Width is the build: a mono one fits a one-channel destination such as a wedge or a mono input, a stereo one a stereo strip. Latency is the curator's class, the same zero / low / high the catalog uses.

EQ

Plugin Width Latency Note
LSP Parametric EQ x16 stereo zero
LSP Parametric EQ x16 (mono) mono zero Mono build of the palette's default parametric.

Calf EQ 8-Band stereo zero
ZamEQ2 mono zero
ZamGEQ31 (mono) mono zero 31-band mono graphic EQ — the traditional one-third-octave wedge tool, and cheap enough to run on every mix.
HRP+ (per-instrument) mono zero Harmonic Resonance Processor, live insert form — finds unusually strong harmonic components of ONE instrument's material and applies sparse, conservative cuts through an ordinary bell cascade.

Compressor

Plugin Width Latency Note
LSP Compressor stereo zero
LSP Compressor (mono) mono zero Mono build of the palette's default comp — ~40 % cheaper per instance.
LSP Sidechain Comp stereo zero Sidechain/ducking compressor.
x42 Compressor stereo zero Dynamic compressor — auto-makeup, easy to drive.
x42 Compressor (mono) mono zero Mono dynamic compressor — auto-makeup, zero-latency, no look-ahead control to overrun a monitor budget.
Calf Compressor stereo zero
Calf Mono Compressor mono zero Calf's dedicated mono comp.
ZamComp stereo zero
Airwindows Pressure5 stereo low Airwindows' compressor with ClipOnly2 built in — 13.2 dB of implied gain reduction at pressure=0.7, one frame of delay (0.021 ms @ 48 k), 0.34 % of a core per instance at 96 kHz.
LSP Multiband Comp x8 stereo high 8-band crossover — measures 0 ms in its default Classic (IIR) mode, but the linear-phase modes add latency.
Calf Multiband Comp stereo high Crossover band-split adds latency.

Glue Bus Comp

Plugin Width Latency Note
LSP Bus Comp (glue) stereo zero SSL-style glue on a bus — threshold/ratio/attack/release/makeup, stereo.
Calf Bus Comp (glue) stereo zero Alternative glue comp — full-featured stereo comp, zero-latency.

Gate / Expander

Plugin Width Latency Note
LSP Gate stereo zero
LSP Gate (mono) mono zero Mono build — measures 0 ms and costs ~40 % less per instance than the stereo one.
LSP Expander stereo zero Gentler than a gate — downward expansion.
LSP Expander (mono) mono zero Mono downward expansion — same sidechain look-ahead caveat as the mono gate.
Calf Gate stereo zero
ZamGate stereo zero
eq10q GT10QM mono zero Mono gate with the stage feature set the others lack — sidechain HPF/LPF, key listen, ratio and knee — and still 0 ms at every rate with no latency-bearing control.
abGate mono zero Mono noise gate — threshold / attack / hold / decay / range.

De-esser

Plugin Width Latency Note
Calf De-esser stereo zero Sibilance control for vocals — zero-latency.

Limiter

Plugin Width Latency Note
LSP Limiter stereo low Measured 5 ms look-ahead at default settings, at every rate: low by the console's own rule, because 5 ms fits inside one buffer at the rig's canonical rate (operator ruling 2026-09-08: the class follows the rule, never the plugin).
LSP Multiband Limiter stereo low Multiband look-ahead limiter.
LSP Limiter (mono) mono low Mono build — the same measured 5 ms look-ahead as the stereo one and the same class, low by the rule (operator ruling 2026-09-08).
x42 Digital Peak Limiter stereo low True-peak limiter, 64-frame look-ahead (measured 1.33 ms @ 48 kHz).
x42 Digital Peak Limiter (mono) mono low Mono true-peak limiter, same measured 64-frame look-ahead as the stereo build.
Calf Limiter stereo low
ZaMaxim stereo low Brickwall look-ahead maximiser.

Reverb

Plugin Width Latency Note
Dragonfly Hall stereo zero Algorithmic hall — the live reverb.
Dragonfly Room stereo zero Algorithmic room.
Dragonfly Plate stereo zero Algorithmic plate — a plate reverb, and the cheapest reverb in the palette: 0.24 % of a core per instance at 96 kHz, 0 ms dry-path latency at all four rates, flat cost in silence.
Calf Reverb stereo low Algorithmic — the installed live default where Dragonfly is absent.
ZamVerb stereo low
Airwindows Verbity stereo low Cheap algorithmic reverb (0.29 % of a core per instance at 96 k) with a clean decay: -51 dB re peak at 200 ms, -99 dB at 1 s at defaults.
Airwindows kPlateA stereo low Plate reverb — a character the palette's halls and rooms do not cover.
LSP Convolution Reverb stereo high Long-IR convolution — measures 0 ms only because no IR is loaded; the latency arrives with the IR.
x42 IR Convolver stereo high Impulse-response convolver — measures 0 ms only with no IR loaded; real latency depends on the IR/partitioning.

Delay

Plugin Width Latency Note
LSP Delay Compensator stereo zero Sample-accurate fixed delay (alignment).
LSP Delay Compensator (mono) mono zero Mono sample-accurate fixed delay (alignment) — the cheapest entry in the palette at any width.

Plugin Width Latency Note
Calf Saturator stereo zero
Calf Tape Simulator stereo zero Tape-style colour + soft saturation.
Calf Exciter stereo zero Harmonic top-end enhancer.

LSP Filter (mono) mono zero Mono build for a wedge or a mono input channel — no stereo legs to sum.
Calf Filter stereo zero
Butterworth HPF (mono) mono zero Plain mono Butterworth high-pass — cutoff and resonance, nothing else.

What suitable means

A plugin marked suitable has earned a place on the console's own audio thread, where there is no separate host process between it and the mix. That is worth a buffer in and a buffer out per insert, and at 96 kHz an engineer can hear the difference. It is also the most dangerous place in the system: one memory allocation inside the audio callback is the whole desk's dropout, and one crash is the whole desk's silence. So it is earned, never granted:

  • Nothing that can block. No memory allocation, no lock and no system call anywhere in the audio callback, measured under a sweep of every parameter — not read from a promise in the plugin's documentation.
  • A clean soak at all four rates. 44.1, 48, 96 and 192 kHz, each run long enough to catch the plugins that look perfect for a second.
  • A thousand rack and unrack cycles without a leak, a stray thread or a fault.
  • Affordable, knowable and the right shape — its cost at 96 kHz under the ceiling, its latency resolved, and one-in-one-out or stereo so it fits a strip.

The verdict is the worst of those, and an absent measurement counts against rather than for: unknown keeps a plugin in its own process exactly as unsuitable does. conditional means it measured well but one dimension carries a caution worth reading before you lean on it.

Of the plugins measured, 367 are suitable today. The rest run in a host process of their own, which costs a buffer each way and is where the large majority of any LV2 collection will always live. Nothing about that makes them worse plugins.
