The models
| Model | Inputs | Outputs | Identifier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roland S-0808 | 8 | 8 | s0808 |
| Roland S-1608 | 16 | 8 | s1608 |
| Roland S-4000S | 32 | 8 | s4000s |
The identifier in the last column is what the transport is told; the mixer sizes its
reac-capture node to the box's inputs and its reac-playback node to the box's
outputs, and labels the ports accordingly.
Declaring the model matters. It is what makes channel 9 on the surface correspond to input 9 on the box, and it is what stops the desk from offering you inputs the box does not have.
Choosing the model in the mixer
Setup → Adapters → REAC offers the box model along with the network interface and a label for the box. The label is yours — "Stage left", "Drums" — and it is what the patchbay shows.
Two honest limitations of the current Setup screen:
- The model list in Setup offers S-0808 and S-1608. An S-4000S works — the transport recognizes it on the wire with nothing configured (reac-pw, 2026-08-05) — but the Setup menu cannot express it, so an S-4000S rig leaves the model unset and the box declares itself. See REAC configuration.
- One box per REAC segment. The transport tracks a single stagebox: the first box to complete its handshake owns the link, and frames from any other box on the same wire are ignored. Driving several boxes at once is designed but not built. If you need two boxes, they need two separate segments (two NICs, or two VLANs) and two transport instances.
Which desk the mixer impersonates
REAC has no fixed master — any device on the segment can be the master and the rest
slave to it. When openmixer drives a stagebox it acts as the master, presenting itself as
a Roland desk. Which desk it claims to be is configurable (M-200, M-300 or M-5000;
the default is M-200), and it changes only the identity on the wire: a box locks to
any of the profiles.
You will normally never touch this. It exists because a box may validate what kind of device is talking to it.
What you get in the mixer
Once the box has established:
reac-captureappears in the Patchbay as a source device band with one row per box input, numbered1 … N.reac-playbackappears in the output routing row, so a bus or the main mix can be sent to a box output.- Per-input head-amp control — +48 V phantom, pad, sensitivity — is available on the source layer. See head-amp control.
If the box never appears, work through the box is not establishing.
Other boxes
Other REAC devices exist and some of them will very likely work — the handshake is not model-specific — but only the three models above are declared, sized and labelled by the mixer, and only they have been run on real hardware. Treat anything else as untested.
