Overlay one sparse config over another, per SECTION FIELD: a field the overlay sets wins; a field it leaves out keeps the base value (schema defaults only apply to fields neither layer set — apply them by parseConfiging the result). device.options is replaced whole, not merged (it is adapter-opaque).
