the output count is taken from the nearest standard preset; otherwise it falls back to the
default DEFAULT_PRESET (16:8). The verdict is always logged — the fallback is never
silent. This is a deliberate seam: full live stagebox enumeration is wired by passing real
discovered devices in; with none, the honest default is used.
