Decodes through refArray, then refuses unless the decoded list and current() hold
the same channels, each exactly once. The refusal names the difference — missing are
channels the desk holds that the list left out, extra are ones it invented or repeated —
so a surface can say which strips rather than "bad list". Order is the VALUE here; the SET
belongs to whoever current() reads (the console allocation), never to the writer.
